Huperzine A is a substance extracted from a plant called Chinese club moss (Huperzia serrata). In traditional Chinese medicine, Chinese club moss has long been used to reduce inflammation and to sharpen memory. Sold as a dietary supplement and nootropic, Huperzine A is typically used for cognitive health.


Huperzine is used in alternative medicine, It has been found to act as a cholinesterase inhibitor, a type of medicine used to prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine (a chemical that is found between the nerve synapses, or gaps, between nerve cells. When activated, it causes the contraction of skeletal muscles and activates glandular functions in the endocrine system.

Huperzine A is most commonly used to treat Alzheimer’s disease clinically but also used to boost energy, increase alertness, and aid in the treatment of myasthenia gravis (an autoimmune disorder that affects the muscles).

For the past 6 weeks I have been using the supplement Huperzine-A in hopes of boosting my cognitive function and memory. So far I have noticed a pretty substantial difference from my day-to-day life. First things first these suckers work fast, taking just 5-10 minutes to kick in. One study found that huperzine A appears in the blood at 5 – 10 minutes after subjects ingest 0.4 mg. Huperzine A in the blood reaches the maximum concentration at around 58 minutes. After 10 hours 50% of it still present (half-life = 10 hours) and its mostly eliminated after 24 hours. (

After taking these I have noticed that I am more awake and focused throughout the day and just overall much more present in time. My brain feels like there is less “fog” up there and I can think clearer than ever before which is allowing me to get more shit done and be much more productive! When I take these its almost as if the productive switch inside my brain is flipped on and I get into this flow-like state of “get shit done”. Overall I would highly recommend trying out Huperzine-A for yourself and see if it has any lasting effects on you.


Supplementation of huperzine-A tends to be in the range of 50-200mcg daily, and while this can be divided into multiple dosages throughout the day it’s usually taken at a single dose. Supplementation of huperzine-A does not require food to be congested with it and can be taken in a fasted state.

Cycling of huperzine-A is recommended since it can remain in the body for quite some time (half-life of 10-14 hours), and although a 'cycle' of huperzine-A usually lasts 2-4 weeks followed by a break the optimal cycle length is not yet known.

Over the past 6 weeks I have been taking up 2-3 pills(200mcg/pill) every day 2 weeks on followed by 2 weeks off increasing another week on each cycle (2:2,3:2,4:2)
